Journey to a Black Belt: Martial Art Rankings
Belts and Sashes in martial arts are usually earned through vigorous work and training, and handed down from master to student. The status of “Black Belt” is viewed as the elite fighter of the martial arts world. In reality, belt ranks do not show a persons combat ability… but instead shows their dedication to the art.
One legend states that warriors would receive a white sash at the beginning of their martial arts training. They would never take off or wash the sash during the duration of their training. After years of dedication and practice, the sash would darken until eventually turning black. This would symbolize the hard work performed by the martial arts practitioner throughout their journey.
Different disciplines have different guidelines as far as handing out black belts to students. Some styles (such as modern day Karate) allow children to obtain black belts, while other styles (such as jiu jitsu) only allow black belts to be obtained after actual combat ability is proven over years.
In tournaments, where martial arts fighting ability is examined, we see all the time lower ranking fighters outclass a more experienced or higher ranked martial artist. So how is it possible that a martial artist with a lower ranked belt can defeat higher ranked opponents?
- Some people have a natural ability for actual combat, but may not have the skills required to obtain a higher rank in a martial arts system. (Lack formal training, has combat experience.)
- Some people may be able to master all forms and techniques of a system, but struggle to translate them into real life situations. (Lack combat experience, has formal training.)
Martial arts is not only meant to be used for combat, but should be used to enhance the practitioners over all life. There are many elements and benefits to gain from martial arts. It is better to concentrate only on obtaining whatever skills you can acquire from the teachings, and focus less on the formality of ranking systems.
