Kratom (also known as Mitragyna Speciosa) is a form of evergreen tree in the coffee family. The plant is a naturally growing tree native to Southeast Asia. Strains of kratom include bali, borneo, thai, maeng da and many others. Kratom can grow up to thirty feet in height, and get as wide as fifteen feet in diameter. Due to its psychoactive properties, the broad leaves of the kratom plant have historically been used as a natural alternative to other potentially harmful medicines.
The alkaloids in the leaves of kratom have been shown to have medicinal effects which help aid in the treatment of many illnesses such as pain, anxiety, depression, blood pressure and even opium addiction. There has never been a reported overdose while using kratom. These qualities make kratom a safe alternative to other forms of harmful medicines such as conventional painkillers and muscle relaxers. Public health officials in Thailand (kratoms native country) have stated that no health risks have been linked to the use of kratom.
When taken in small doses, kratom has been shown to provide an uplifting and energetic effect. Higher doses of kratom provides a more sedative and euphoric state, which aids in treatment of issues such as muscle pain. Since the alkaloids in kratom are effected by your metabolism, it should be taken on an empty stomach (30 minutes prior to eating) in order to experience the full effects. When too much kratom is ingested, side effects may include nausea and headache.
Historically, leaves of the kratom plant would be chewed for its medicinal effects. Today, kratom comes in many forms and can be taken in various ways. Potency and price vary depending on the strain. Forms of kratom consumption include:
Raw Leaves:
The leaves of kratom have historically simply been chewed for its effects – a downfall to this may be that the taste of kratom is not pleasing.
Kratom Tea:
Leaves can be ground and made into a tea – tea can be mixed with other flavors to provide a mask for the unpleasant taste of kratom.
Gel Capsules:
Raw leaves can be ground and put in capsules – although this helps with the taste, many capsules must be consumed for desired effects.
Extracts:
Extracts are higher concentrated forms of kratom alkaloids -this allows the effects to be obtained using a lesser amount of the substance. Less gel capsules would be needed if used with an extract.
*Other forms include liquid kratom extract, kratom powder, etc.
Currently kratom is available for legal purchase in the United States. It can be used as a natural and safe alternative to many other forms of conventional drugs to treat illnesses of all kinds.
