Workout routines and exercises are proven ways for you to stay in shape and improve overall fitness. Millions of people find time everyday to perform whichever workout plan they select for their personal goals. Whether you are going to your local gym for personal training or using a home gym machine in the garage, there is one very important step many people forget to take before beginning their routine…stretching.

Multiple stretches should be performed before any workout, not just the standard few seconds worth of toe touching. Performing multiple stretches and holding each stretch for a proper amount of time can drastically reduce injuries and increase the range of motion in your joints and muscles. Increasing the the bodies range of motion can improve performance during workouts and other physical activities.

After completing any exercise or workout routine, stretching should once again be performed in order to improve your body’s recovery. Stretching afterwords helps remove lactic acid from the muscles, which in turn reduces cramps and muscle ache. Stretching has also been used for relaxation and meditation purposes in many practices such as yoga and tai chi. Breathing techniques combined with proper stretching can calm mind and revitalize the body.

Stretching before and after any physical activity may be just as important as the actual exercise itself. Whether you are an athlete attempting to win a championship or a yoga practitioner trying to reach enlightenment, stretching is one tool that is guaranteed to help you reach your goal.
