While preparing for any physical activity, most people go through a checklist of things they may need in order to get the most out of the experience. Standard preparation techniques may include anything from stretching to making sure the right type of shoes are being worn. Although much thought is put into exercise preparation, one key aspect of cardiovascular activities that many might overlook may very well be the most important…breathing.
Breathing is a required function our body performs in order to provide us with the necessary elements to sustain human life. Along with providing the body with oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, breathing is also believed to regulate Chi flow. Chi can be defined as the bio-electricity generating throughout the human body, as well as other living organisms.
In order to effectively regulate Chi, breathing must be controlled both consciously and unconsciously. Conscious control of breathing can be practiced using various forms of meditation and yoga, which focus on breath awareness. After consciously practicing breath control and chi regulation, breathing will unconsciously begin to become deeper and slower. This deep and slow breathing allows increased oxygen and blood circulation to the bodies muscles, while also providing stronger Chi flow to the lower dan tian.
Breathing is a very important factor to consider in daily routines. Practicing breathing techniques can increase lung strength and oxygen distribution, and also allow for better Chi flow to improve both physical and mental states of being.
